A typical problem with that old generation of vcr's. It is indicative of OSD (on screen data) IC failure. MBxxx series of OSD chips

The said IC was designed by Fujitsu & had a built in failure mode which translated into rows/colum figures when failed. Everything would work with the exception of on screen display---won't be able to timer prog etc. You could bypass the failed IC.

'd be lucky to find a replacement since it has long been discontinued.

Unit has a screen of rows and columns of what I would best describe as small white, house figures overlaying video. Video behind overlay is clear. Figures on overlay screen are clear and distinct. Any suggestions?
