This unit was also multi region and I read somewhere how to do a factory reset and did that. It was suggested to fix the problem. Now I have just noticed the unit only plays region 2 discs and I can't find a hack anywhere.
Any ideas anyone? |

While you are correct on majority of them, that particular unit was & still is a high-end DVD/CD/SACD player & not a throwaway. Originally sold for something around $2K. ...but it may turn in to one after all the hassle? |

| I did write a letter to Marantz Australia who are the guys who serviced it (Qualifi) and they just ignored it. Can you believe the idiot there told me it was because I was using old CD pressings and the machine would reject such discs even if the discs had no scratches. I took the whole assembly out as you told me, but there is another ribbon attached that seems to be soldered to the part and to access the other end, I would need to remove 2 lots of boards that I would probably find difficult. Maybe I could try a Denon serviceman. Thanks for all your advice. You have been very helpful. |

Sorry to hear that. That is awful!--nothing short of highway robbery. Not sure how it operates in Australia but if I had to go thru that in the US, I would raise holly hell with Marantz

Wish I could help. If you want, I could send you a service man from a Denon model that uses an identical mechanism but no way to tell if the tray assembly is identical? Still you would need to invest in a mechanism which I do not have the specific part number for. Even Denon uses several versions of the same part.
Or may be if you could find the exact service manual, it would surely have all the information, part# etc. |

| I did take it to the only authorised Marantz dealer in my country. After them servicing it and telling me it was fixed they charged me $150. I took it home and it still had the same problem. Then when I took it back again without even looking at it, they wanted to charge me $250 on top of that to change the assembly over. I don't trust these guys. I have caught them out lying also and was hoping I may be able to try fixing myself. |

30 screws! Thought you were a tech.
In order to get to the other end of the cable, you would need to take out the entire assembly to gain access to the connector on the RF board. It is usually no more than 4-6 screws if you are familiar with the unit and know the sequence. I can see where you got the pickup and rather surprised! As a rule of thumb, DVD pickups always require some sort of tangential adjustment(Hex allen screws covered W/blue locktite) for proper operation especially on high-end home players. That is why it is mainly sold as an assembly by the manufacturer.
What I was referring to is the mechanism assembly pictured below. Already preset and ready to go. All you need to do is to remove the shorting plug before putting it all together. You would still need to get the entire assembly w/tray out in order to replace it. Apparently there are also software upgrades for this unit and quite honestly, before spending any more money or any further tries I'd suggest let a servicer handle that.

PS, if you are wondering how I was able to buy the assembly seperately.
It was from these guys here.

Hi I tried the eraser but it didn't work. I attempted to change ends like you said, but after taking out around 30 screws I still couldn't find the other end.
If I just bought a new motor, do you think that would do the trick? |

Ok, Gotchya.
That is EXACTLY the same mechanism that was standard on numerous Denon DVD players. Used to replace them all the time as an Authorized servicer for them. It was updated several times and although rather reliable, it did have problems with pickup and on occasion with binding spindle motor.
However, due to the needed set-up for tangential settings, It was always replaced as an assembly--NOT just the pickup by itself! Even if we wanted to just replace the pickup or any other part of the mechanism, it was never available?
And you say that you replaced just the pickup? Unless you have a way/know on how to peek the XY settings, you should always change it as an assembly for this particular mechanism.
That being said though, if you are still experiencing the same problem, I suspect that you may in fact have a Ribbon connector issue? (white ribbon)
Try cleaning either end with a pencil eraser and reconnect or better yet reverse it and see if there is any change? |
