I have a Panasonic DVD-S27 DVD player. It was built in March 2004 and has always worked fine. Until last week when I tried to play a movie and it made the sound you'll hear in a sec (I recorded it:P). It will spin the disc a bunch as if the disc is damaged and it's looking for an area it can read. Except the disc isn't damaged, and it never progresses beyond this. The LCD display on the front usually lists the number of tracks for a music CD or the chapters in a DVD movie, but now it just says 0 no matter what I put in. Certainly nothing is transmitted to my receiver and I never get video or audio. It just sits at the blue DVD disc logo.

I ripped it apart to see if I could find anything physically damaged in the motor, but everything looks fine and there aren't bits of plastic broken off. While I was at it, I decided to stick a microphone in there and record the noise, to see if I could maybe get a diagnosis somewhere. Quality is pretty poor, so thank Razer for that. :P

Gets good at about 0:35. Once I hit play at the beginning, I didn't touch anything. It does the entire ~2 minute sequence on its own, every time.

I realize a DVD player is an expendable item, but I'd love to be able to fix it because it matches the rest of my stuff, and it's always been a quiet, reliable player which works 100% with my universal remote. But if it's not fixable, I don't mind getting a new one. Probably wait for Boxing day and just get a BluRay, though.:P

Lol. No, it can't, because you don't have such a manual on your site. How about you reconfigure your bot to actually do a product search before posting? That way you could make it link directly to the manual as well.

if the disc rotates replacing the laser assy is the cure, if it doesn't try giving it a nudge, if it the rotates replace the spindle motor assy, either way it will be probably be cheaper to replace the complete player.

Your player apparently can't read the TOC (table of contents of the disc). There are a number of possible reasons for this: reduced laser output due to ageing of the laser, dust on the lens (certainly possible if you are a smoker), etc. etc. But most likely you will have to replace the laser module to get this fixed. Tweaking the laser output power is a wild guess if you do not have the service manual and an oscilloscope.

I recently repaired 2 different players that were exhibiting a "TOC-problem" by replacing the laser module and it worked perfectly. It was basicaly plug-and-play without the need for electronically realigning any of the player's settings. From what I have read, that is not always the case and for those cases you would then certainly need a service manual.

A spare laser module can be very expensive. In my case I was probably lucky as I never paid more than 10 dollars per module.

Before you start, read through this website as it contains lots and lots of very useful advice: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/cdfaq.htm

Good luck.
