|

Hi All,
New to the forum in view of my plight with my Plasma.
Long story cut short, 15 month old Plasma, great condition and been working great with average hour used etc. treated myself to wall bracket and when trying to lift from stand, my partner could not manage the weight. Anyway, we dropped it on the floor but only from the height of a few inches. Assumed no real damage as such small scuff, on set buttons pushed into holes and standby light was still on. Finally managed to get on the wall and when I turned on via RCU, there was only sound, no picture.
I went via insurance as we dropped it and the collected for inspection. Today I get a call to say that the insurers have the report and that it was a power supply fault. I thought great and before I could ask how long for repair, they told me that they will not cover this as ' power supply faults are common failures and not related to damage'.
I can't get my head around this. They are essentially saying that it is absolute sheer coincidence that the power supply failed at the exact same time that the screen took a bump and that it failed simply as they do fail and had nothing to do with the knock it took.
From my end, I had a great and working screen before it took a bump and my insurers are tryingto wash their hands of this one.
Surely I can't be wrong in thinking that the complex circuits and stuff inside modern TV's don't like being banged about?
My question to you guys in the know is - can impact or bumps etc possibly trigger a component failure or is it really just a bizzare coincidence? Surely a significant bang can't be discounted?
Sorry to post this as I appreciate it's not the usual for the forums.
I'm just trying to better understand what they are trying to tell me.
So frustrating as this is an honest and i thinbk simple issue. If I wanted be cute over my tv when contacting the insurer, I would have made sure that it was properly faulty, a la wii remote control meets screen! !
Any feedback would be appreciated. |

Common sense dictates that dropping a set would cause a physical damage(broken panel/cracked Pcb etc). While there is always a possibility of coincidence, power supply does not fail because of a drop? --unless lets say it cracked the power supply PC board or a component broke & shot-off the board? It won't take much to render a power supply inoperative; It could be a tiny surface mount component not easily seen by the naked eye.
I can see how it can turn in to a pissing contest with insurance company since most servicers will ONLY change boards to isolate the problem and rarely decide to look further.---unless they change the wording such as "damage possibly caused by set being dropped" which is usually acceptable by the insurer"
Guess at this point, you can be the squeaky wheel & try asking "exactly what failed in the supply?" or even ask for the replaced part... but in the end you might be stuck with the bill

I'd ask the insurance company what qualifies them to determine it's a power supply probem. You can unplug board by baord to see which one is loading down the set. |
