Problems with turn signal lights on side view mirrors

I recently purchased after market chevron turn signal lights that go on my existing side view mirrors. I wired the lights through the mirror through the door under the dash, then into the engine compartment where I tapped into the existing turn signal wires. The turn signals work fine, except when I turn on the headlights. When I turn on the headlights the mirror turn signals do not work. I have a mitsu montero sport 2002 and used 16guage wire to run the connection. Any thoughts or suggestions on fixing this is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like an earthing problem. How do you have your new lights earthed? Doors sometimes do not earth very well. Is the battery earthed to the body with a good connection? Try clipping a wire from the battery earth terminal to the turn signal earth and see if this fixes the problem.
