Samsung LE23R81 / ASUS M2N VM-DVI audio problems

I have a Samsung TV as listed & recently changed from an MSI DVI (AGP) video card to a motherboard with the same functionality.
All the latest drivers for audio and video (before Vista) installed + latest BIOS (603)
Everything works except the L/R audio input into the Samsung LCD with the DVI-D <> HDMI interface. (headphones & stereo equipment indicate that sound is being put through - just ignored by the lcd tv)
HDMI 2 is supposed to be connected with an HDMI plug + L/R audio. (as shown in the manual)

Does anyone have a clue?

I found the problem when the NVIDIA drivers are installed the audio stops, indicating to the LCD screen that audio is included in the DVI link & ignore the separate L/R audio input.
