Sony KV29F3U service mode entry

I am trying to get into the service mode on a Sony KV29F3U. The instructions to press + (osd button), 5, vol+, TV appear to do nothing but lock up the whole tv. All I get is a black screen. The cancel procedure works (luckily because 'her indoors' would have a fit if the soaps were unavailable!)

Any Ideas?

set needs to be in standby before you press the buttons.

I've tried it with the set on standby and just get a black screen. Any ideas?

the only other way i use to enter the service mode is via the sony trace interface, replacing the eeprom will cause the micro to upload default values but that is a drastic measure, what do you need to adjust in the service mode?
