JVC GR-DVL720U tape won't load properly

Hi,
wondering if someone can help me troubleshoot this mini DV camcorder.

The tape transport won't click shut and lower the tape into the camera fully, and the power seems to stay on even when the camera is switched off. I get a E03 or E04 message, but have to unplug the camera to shut it down.

If I switch the mode from tape to the memory card function, the camera will power up when replugged in, and all functions for the memory card (snapshot, etc.) seem to work.

Any ideas??
