On screen menu stuck on

I just bought a used JVC AV-2771S TV, it works fine except for one detail:

The on screen menu doesn't ever turn off.

If I just turn it on there's a huge "CABLE-3 TSN" (or whatever channel I go to) message on the screen that doesn't turn off. If I change volume then that just results in a volume bar across the bottom indefinitely.

Did you press the display button on the remote to turn it off?

It didn't come with a remote, and my universal remote only has power, channel, volume and mute.

That's a good idea though, I'll see if I can get one of my VCR remotes to work with it.
