Hi! I recently bought a Skype cordless phone off ebay and had it shipped to Australia. Without first reading the adapter, I plugged the base station straight into the mains (without a stepdown transformer) and then put the handset on the base station to charge. Luckily the phone is ok, as the base station only serves to charge the AAA bateries in the handset....but I assume I have blown the power adapter, does that sound right??

The problem is that the power adapter runs straight into the base station (ie there is no plug). Is there a way of fixing the cheap 110v power adapter? or if not, is it possible to buy a 220v power adapter with the same output and then splice the wires from the old adapter and attach them to the new adapter?

Thanks!

You can use a tranformer as long is same amps and watts, you can cut the wires and connect the white striped to the white stripe, and the only black to the black, plugg in if it doens't work reverse the wires and try again,

Check what data you have available from the blown 110 Volts adaptor. (NAMEPLATE)
Do you know the secondary voltage ? eg 6 or 12 Volts ? AC, DC ?
By the over voltage you may have damaged the internal circuitery from the phone charger too.
It pays to check and see if anything looks obviously burnt out.
Everything in that base set would have been exposed to double the voltage which aint good for electronics.

If it's on the label say 12 volts dc 200 mA, then buy a 240ac / 12dc plug pack from Jaycar or Dick Smiths.
Easiest and safest way to go

Good luck

Just re reading your post.

The base station will not only charge the handset but also picks up the signal from the handset.
Does the base station have a lead which connects to the phone line??

If exposed to overvoltage some damage may have been done.

If you are lucky you may have only blown a fuse.
