Central locking on 1999 Peugeot 406

My central locking started going intermittant on my 1999 peugeot 406 a few months ago...ie worked sometimes then started taking more presses .Eventually didn't work at all even after 2 battery changes.Now when trying to lock/unlock using key in door the lock will occasionally just turn round and round doing nothing then eventually it will unlock.Iam worried that eventually it will not lock or worse unlock. Anyone help please? Sad
