TV Software

My Sharp TV has a facility to automatically update its software.

Can someone tell me a little about what the software does, where it comes from, and how I can learn more about the programme.

Software updates are primarily issued by the manufacturer of the set. It can be for a number of reasons from improving operation or fixing software related bugs.
In general, it is a set of instructions in binary &/or Hex data strictly meant to change various pre-sets on the TV. It's sole purpose is to update &/or change the eprom data that was originally programmed when it was manufactured.
It is not meant(can not) repair any hardware related problem(s)
