| Just had a look in my spare parts box in my workshop. I have a red one, and the legs are exacltly tagged at the sides as the one on your photo. The coding is vague but 400L40 and 6503 is printed on it. That one is rated for 400 volts rms, came out of a 3 phase solid state kWh meter These usually blow to destruction or crack open. In principle your equipment should work without it only for a short testrun. |

| Looks like a Metal Oxide Varistor or MOV device to me too. These are usually near the powersupply at the incoming mains supply to clamp voltage spikes, to protect equipment downstream in the equipment. For 230 Volts RMS i usually get 280 V rms 6 or 20 kA rating from Jaycars for NZ$2, about US$ 1.40 For 110 Volts you probably need to get something around the 140 V rms rating. Good luck, Raymond |

| I agree; looks like a varistor of some sort rather than a capacitor and I've been in electronics over 40 years. Was it across the mains supply? | |

| Do what I did one time. I took an undefinable cap to Radio Shack and used one of their Capacitor Meters to get the value. | |

| ...Strictly going by memory. Seems like I have seen a similiar protector device on some piece of equipment & while it may look like a cap, it is some sort of a protector or varistor? What equipment is it out of? Is it out of some sort of a speaker/crossover ?? | |

I need to replace this capacitor, but I cant seem to find a resource to decode the values. I was hoping a bright individual here might be able to help so I can find a new one. Thanks!  |
