In every vcr I have encountered, the back tension arm is free to encounter the tape at a predertimed point in lace up, & is only retracted at de lace up- any abberations is due to mechanical timing faults- not mode switch- you must dissassemble & look for faults- a spare good vcr is handy here to visually check what should be & isn't- really, all vcr's are different as to how they do the same end result (as are all tv's etc)- because of this, I will sometimes spend hours using logic to understand how this mechanism is designed to work, & feel a sense of satisfaction when I have won!.

Heya folks! I have this RCA vr629hfb here that is perplexing me. It begins to load the tape fine, but after the back tension arm pushes up against the tape (as it should) it decides to come back off the tape further in the loading cycle. Any idea what might cause this behavior? Mode select switch misaligned perhaps?
