I have a Clarke autoranging digital multimeter. If I switch it to read d.c. or a.c. volts, without anything connected to it, it shows spurious constantly varying readings of up to several hundred millivolts. Are these spurious open circuit readings normal, or is it about to die?

Due to high input impedance & the nature of digital counter circuitry, it is a very common.
