In summer, when the relative humidity of the air is high, the need for ESD protection is less than in the rest of the year. As a rule of thumb, no serious protection is necessary when the RH in the room is above 65 %.
Generally, ESD protective clothing is of no use unless all fixed items at the workplace are also properly ESD protected. For instance, all metal structures like shelves and table stands should be grounded by suitable resistors. Chairs, floor mats, desktops, shoes etc should be of dissipative materials and, when necessary, grounded. Avoid cheap plastic trays for storing components or assemblies. Make sure that tips of soldering irons are grounded. |
