The LCD display on the front usually lists the number of tracks for a music CD or the chapters in a DVD movie, but now it just says 0 no matter what I put in. Certainly nothing is transmitted to my receiver and I never get video or audio. It just sits at the blue DVD disc logo.

Your player apparently can't read the TOC (table of contents of the disc). There are a number of possible reasons for this: reduced laser output due to ageing of the laser, dust on the lens (certainly possible if you are a smoker), etc. etc. But most likely you will have to replace the laser module to get this fixed. Tweaking the laser output power is a wild guess if you do not have the service manual and an oscilloscope.

I recently repaired 2 different players that were exhibiting a "TOC-problem" by replacing the laser module and it worked perfectly. It was basicaly plug-and-play without the need for electronically realigning any of the player's settings. From what I have read, that is not always the case and for those cases you would then certainly need a service manual.

A spare laser module can be very expensive. In my case I was probably lucky as I never paid more than 10 dollars per module.

Before you start, read through this website as it contains lots and lots of very useful advice: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/cdfaq.htm

Good luck.

if the disc rotates replacing the laser assy is the cure, if it doesn't try giving it a nudge, if it the rotates replace the spindle motor assy, either way it will be probably be cheaper to replace the complete player.

Lol. No, it can't, because you don't have such a manual on your site. How about you reconfigure your bot to actually do a product search before posting? That way you could make it link directly to the manual as well.
