There are many, many brands out there. Keep in mind that in repair application(s), the main purpose of a frequency generator is to provide a steady source for a clean signal (mainly in the audio range). There is no need for extra features. At a time I had plans to build my own but it quickly became apparent that it was simply not worth it. I have used many brands from the cheaper MCM/kenwood/B&K private labels to fancy Agilent technologies. No doubt you can find all sorts of bargains on the net that are more than enough for consumer repair business. Almost all would include a standard, adjustable generator with some sort of a dial frequency adjustment. Some may have a sweep mode which can be useful if you are repairing speakers &/or dealing with Subwoofers.

On the other hand if you were looking in to precise calibration or RF/microwave applications, having a digital read out is pretty much required.

Looking to buy my first frequency generator. Just thought I would get see if you folks could give me some insight as to what features, controls, and name brand test equipment would be suitable for general A/V Electronics repair. I am not looking for the most expensive units out there. Just a good, solid, middle-of-the-road frequency generator with enough features to use as I grow in my repair abilities. Thanks, in advance, for any input you folks may have.
