I agree it does sound like a bad connection but at 8 years the tube may be getting a bit tired and of course the components will be begining to show signs of stress/tolerance changing.
Could put it in for an estimate or just replace it.
Mitsubishi have not made t.v's for some time although another cheaper company are using the brand name and the quality of these are nothing like Mitsubishi were and are terrible to repair.
Just a thought.

It's not the picture tube. Probably a connection problem with the horizontal sweep or power supply circuit. If you continue to run it before having it repaired, you might develop more damage and a higher cost to have it fixed.

hi. i have a 29 inch mitsubishi tv that is about 8 years old. recently it has started playing up by basically shutting off the picture, leaving a black screen that looks like it has no power on it, and leaving the sound running. sometimes it does this for a few seconds, other times i end up turning it off and trying again later. any ideas what this problem might be? i am not a tv tech (thats obvious huh?) but really just would like to know what the problem with my tv is before i have to pay for a technician to come over and have a look. if the tubes had it, fair enough i need to buy a new tv. if its an easy fix, then i'll go that way. any help greatly appreciated.
