| I don't use one. I think it depends on what the other poster mentioned. If you have an industrial area nearby such as 1000' away then it might be helpful to keep some kinds of problems from occuring if you have a surge protector. But if you live in a residential area where everyone has a house and no one is building things with industial motors and very large inductive loads.. big big motors, and big big welders.. then in my opinion you're OK. Most surges occur when large loads, like whole buildings, turn on or off. Or when a plant turns on in the morning. I've never in 50 years used a surge suppressor at home and have never had any failures. However in industrial applications where just outside the window there were large motors and other large machines we did have failures and we did install surges suppressors. But the failures were not fatal it should be noted.. Only problem is a computer locked up regularly. We put in a surge supressor and the problem decreased. We had to end up installing better grounding and installing a different computer. That fixed the regular lockups. I have a degree in electronics, have worked and built power supplies. I know what I'm talking about. Surge protectors don't have anything to do in home environments. You can make your own good surge protector by using a ferrite core and winding wire around it. And adding a capacitor too if you want. It's that easy. And if lighting hits it.. It will smoke like everything that lightning hits. I guess a warrenty might be helpful. In that case a surge protector with an equipment warrenty might be helpful. I'd buy the cheapest one with a warrenty for $21.00. Andre |

 No it will only protect from voltage spikes on the mains suuply caused by heavy equiptment turning on and off or from Arc welders etc on your domestic mains Rick |

| Can anyone tell me if a surge protector is absolutely necessary when operating electronics? I just bought a new LCD DLP HDTV tonight, and the sales guy was pushing a surge protector on me for $125 bucks. But yet if the house gets struck by lightning, the TV is still fried, he tells me. So what good is it? How is it any different than my $5.00 surge protector my computer is plugged in to? |
