If it rotates the drive belt can still be stretched, or oil/grease on it could make it slip.
Apart from the good advice regarding the motor. Check if teeth have not been stripped on the carousel platter.

So is the motor working? Can you run it with the cover off and see if the motor is working?

That's what I thought but I have taken the covers off and the tray/carousel to the 'out' position and I can turn the drive belt/pulley assembly by hand and the carousel rotates just fine.

Hi,
I have an older Sony HCD-MD5 mini stereo - 3-cd/mini-disc/cassette.
The cd carousel will not rotate at all and the stereo will not play a cd at all. The tray/carousel slides in and out fine but will not rotate a cd into position to play.
Everything else on the unit works fine. I have tried it with the remote but it still will not rotate or play.
Thanks, I'd rather not throw the stereo away but the bench charge for someone to look at it would be more than it's worth.
If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts, I'd appreciate it very much.
Dana
