Just the other day my TV decided it wanted to broadcast all the channels in red and black. I got this TV from its original owner. He said it may need the tubes(?) replaced. Is he right?

There are two causes for this failure:

1) Faulty tube, but most of the times two colors won't disapear at once.

2) Faulty CRT board (electronics). Fairly easy to repair, because most of the times there are 3 (color) circuits, which can be compared with each other.

If you have no experience with electronics, it will be a bit hard to repair it yourself, and probably need to take it to a service center!

pioneer tvs are notorious for bad caps, and very bad when it comes to cold joints.
I would suggest you take it in, but it might be pricey on a set that old.
those sets are 10+ years old and leaky caps is a known issue.

I hate Pioneer. But, they will sell you complete replacement boards. Figure out which brd it is. They say not to try to repair them because the tolerance on the components are so close but it can be done.
