You meant, STP16NE06; made by STS which is an European manufacturer and you can't find it? Obsolete?... What is your application?
In general, you can substitute mosfets depending on your application.
Main criteria is power/current rating, breakdown voltages, case and RDS(on resistance) and in switch mode power supply timing becomes critical too.
Rather than looking for a substitute number, look at the specs of the original and compare it to what is actually available to you. Get as close as possible to the specs, you can always go with higher current & breakdowns with less deviation in RDS and timing.
ie, NDP4060L or FQP13N06 (both made by Fairchild) are good candidates

This is a very common problem with industrial types of power mosfets. The manufacturers improve their processes from time to time and every time a part is revised, it gets a new part number. In some cases, a part gets obsolete already two or three years after its release, but then there is always an improved replacement from the same manufacturer.

As vtech says, the best thing is to compare the datasheet for the original part with the parts that are currently available on the market. However, a good feature to get some initial clues of possible candidates is the cross reference search at some semiconductor manufacturer's websites (for
instance ON, Fairchild, NXP).
