I have an AOC LM-729 which goes 'black' (no video-background) after a few minutes......any ideas?

No ideas for the moment, but it seems to be a common fault. I know of two such AOC displays which have got the same problem after some two years duty, but i haven't had the occasion to take a nearer look on them yet.

It is most likely the CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). I took my monitor apart and was able to pull the backlight tubes out. When you turn your monitor on, wait until it turns black or whatever it does. Then take a flashlight and turn it on and put it against the screen. If you can see your desktop or whatever you have open then it is the backlights(CCFL). If not then it is the screen itself or the inverter board. I am currently looking for the replacement part number for the CCFL tubes. I have contacted AOC and am awaiting a reply. Hope this helps.
