portable cassette walkman-noise

Here is a challenge for this 'back in the day'format.
I still play cassette tapes and acquired a very mint black metal body Aiwa walkman last year( dolby NR, auto reverse,etc.)It has an attached ,screw-on battery pack which holds 2 aaa alkaline which I use or UM-4 batteries which are not available.There is an annoying low level background noise which may come from the motor? I had a friend look at it who suggested it may be a capacitor?but without the schematics could not troubleshoot further.
I wish I could achieve a low cost fix for this in an otherwise great little player.Your advice would be appreciated.

...afraid not as easy as taking a "fallen CD" out of a chnger.

If the noise is like a "hum" through the headphones, it may be capacitor issue in the power supply or even something as a ground issue?, but motor? Don't see how it is related? need more diagnostics
