what does "Check Printer" flashing on monitor mean

I am having a problem with a Cannon MP390 printer that I cannot seem to locate the solution to. As soon as the unit is powered up the words "Check Printer" begin flashing on the monitor and I can get the printer to do nothing at all. Help Please ????

Normally when a computer first powers up it self tests internal and external devices and if a communication problem or faulty device exists it informs you.
If you have checked the printer lead etc then as a last resort you could disconect, uninstall and reinstall with the latest drivers downloaded from the Cannon website for your model of printer, operating system and reinstall.
If this fails to solve the problem then it may be the printer has a fault.
