So what were you doing at shool asleep at the back of the room?

I resistor does not have to be open to make the circuit fail, it could be "high"

(Is this a IQ test or something)

You just measure it with a resistance meter if the reading is not close to the value then then the resistor is either high or open.

Can you not find a tutorial on internet. pop your question in to google who knows you might hit jack pot in a short time.
