"The developing item about the sealing and packing technique by unleaded soldering at low temperature" started by the Japanese Electronics Sealing Association and the manufacturers in August, 2000 public their research results. Though some topics need still to solve, the relevant personage said that these results have already met the practical level currently.
In "the developing item about the sealing and packing technique by unleaded soldering at low temperature", the soldering that can be welded at the temperature not more than 220℃ is named unleaded soldering of low temperature and the Sn- Zn makes the unleaded soldering as main object. The developing personnel have researched the aging phenomenon in the environment with high temperature and very damp air and the compatibility among the plated coppers of the PC board. FUJI COMPANY has announced the characteristic of the soldering and the topics need to be solved besides these basic characteristics and is noticed extensively by the same profession because of the announcement about the unleaded soldering of Sn-Zn with new structure in June.
The research evidences that the unleaded soldering product of Sn-Zn is not proper to use at the environment with temperature of +85℃ and humidity of RH85 because the Zn exposed in the surface of the soldering will be oxidized under this condition so as to descend the welding strength. However, there is no problem in the environment with the temperature of +90℃ and the humidity of RH60%. In addition, the researcher still discovers that the welding strength will descend much when the temperature is higher than 150 ℃ because the Zn and Cu would become metal compounds and the reason is the Bi in the soldering. Of so add the Bi, it is for letting the soldering more easily to be adhered. FUJI COMPANY also declares that the new soldering as Sn-Zn-Al that can make up the weakness of the Sn-Zn unleaded soldering has already been found out. According to the introduction of the company, it not only resolves the above-mentioned problems of the Sn-Zn unleaded soldering, but also leads the welding strength and the welding credibility to attain, even exceed that of the Sn-Pb soldering through adding the Al. The recent research topic is that the welding must be carried on in the nitrogen and currently this company has already entrusted several manufacturers to try to improve the assistant welding agent in order to weld in the air like the Sn-Pb soldering.

I don't have much faith in this unleaded solder, as would seem others as
the military and aircraft industry won't touch it! |
