scanning from a canon ir5000

I want to scan on a network from a canon ir5000. So far, after a bit of work i managed to actually get it all connected up and working. However i can only scan sheets by putting the papers in the feeder. I want to scan from documents that i can put on the glass panel . but it won't let me. i hope that all makes sense. can anyone help? I would really appreciate it as it's driving me mad!!
