Ford 6000ne (rds)

Ive being trying to install the code on Ford 6000ne with rds but i cant enter the code!.
On the display i see "code----" with the 4 dashes flashing but under the "o" in code there is a number "1" ,i cant change it or add any numbers.
The car is new to me so i dont know the history,ive tried taking the stereo out and also disconecting the battery but the dsplay still stays the same!.

Ive just looked at a friends Ford stereo manual and it would appear that the screen is ready to accept a code,the number 1 under "code----" is ment to be the 1st atempt to add a code but i just cant add the code!!.
