NEC 4210w w/no picture

The green light comes on and there is no picture. I can press buttons on the remote that make a black and white rectangle appear on the left side of the screen. The rectangle occupies about 1/3 of the screen and contains black and white horizontal lines varying in thickness from very tiny to several inches thick.

The fans run and there is sound through the speakers which are connected to the unit. Also, there is a burning chemical smell coming from the two fans on the far left.

Any ideas what is causing this and how to repair it?
