NTL VS 2001 telephone handset - problem

I have an NTL VS2001 telephone handset. It is digital cordless w/ ansaphone.

One of the handsets (VS2000) has recently developed a problem. When I try to call out, it makes an intermittent beeping noise when I dial the number.

I get dialling tone OK - the problem arises when I have dialled the number. The other handset works fine.

I have also tried swapping the batteries in the handset and removing the batteries altogether and unlpugging the charger for an hour. Makes no difference.

Now NTL have been swallowed by Virgin, and the product is out of warranty, no technical support is available.

Can anyone help please?
