Panasonic stereo volume is "cracking"

Hello,
I'm a newbie,so please be gentle.
I own a Panasonic SE-P5 stereo system (circa 1982). When I turn the volume knob the sound get all "crackling/hissing".
Is it a knob repair/replacement/cleaning?
Befroe I start taking it apart I wanted an idea of what it might be.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Yes , sounds like cleaning the control should take care of it but, it may also be too much wear on the control?---try cleaning first.
