Samsung Tv sound issues

Hello,
I have a Samsung tv, about 5 years old, with Directv. I'm not sure if Directv has anything to do with it but the sound does not work when the red, white and yellow video plugs are plugged into the right plugs in the back of the tv. If I plug the red and white plugs into the plugs above the "right plugs" the sound works but it is really loud and I can not turn it down or up. Sometimes the sound works perfectly but other times it does what I described above. I have tried to reprogram the tv on my directv remote and it has worked a few times but not anymore. Any advice?
