Variac/powerstat/autotransformer etc.
Can I successfully use one rated at 220/240, to vary a 110/120 volt line?
(60HZ, single phase)
looking to lower 128 overvoltage to a more reasonable 120 or so.

Yes indeed, just make sure that you don't overload the variac. Remember that the current rating remains unchanged when you run it from a lower mains voltage, but you should not load it with more than half its rated power. |

why 1/2 rated power? you tell her that the current remains the same automatically means half power. |
