Kenwood Audio Video Receiver

I was given a Kenwood VR 517, and we were programming the Direct TV remote to work with the receiver, when we were trying out the numbers to change the mode, from DVD, to radio, etc with the remote, all of a sudden it stopped working. I have the right code, 31313, but the receiver will not respond now and the remote has been reset. Is there a way to clear the receiver so that it will pick up the remote again? I cannot get the remote to work with the receiver at all. I have gone through the 30 minute code search process about 10 times and have no more time to waste. What is happening.
