. . . hi everybody; great forum here!
I'm hoping somebody can walk me though the process of fixing my VCR.
It just started to display a snowy and broken up image upon playback.
. . . thanks!

. . . thanks gary!
I tried using a Bib brand (U.K.) video head cleaner on said vcr prior to posting here, but to no avail.
This head cleaner cartridge has push button format for cleaning fluid application, but it is years old, so I'm wondering if perhaps the cleaning fluid reservoir is spent.
I'm going to buy a fresh cleaning cartridge, try it, and will post back with results.
hopefully it won't get to having to replace head drum . . .
. . . thanks again for responding!

Get the lid off the player and clean the heads / drum with an alcohol based cleaner (Isopropyl alcohol for example). Put some onto a lint free cloth, or better still invest in some head cleaning wipes and apply gently to the head / drum whilst slowly rotating the head by hand, be extremely careful not to damage the heads. Make sure you get all the oxide deposits out of the corners of the drum too, and off the capstan motor drive spindle.
If this doesn't work it's new heads needed. |

. . . thank you gridnutter!
I will try what you have suggested and post back with the results.
Just one question before I attempt this: you mentioned making sure I get all the oxide deposits out of the corners of the drum as well. The drum is of course cylindrical, so I'm not sure just what you mean by corners of the drum . . . if you (or anyone else reading this who may know) could post back clarification on just this one concern, then I should be ready to give it a go!
. . . thanks!

Hi
The drum has a "ridge" that guides the tape around it. The ridge tapers off and tends to be a collecting point for oxide build up which can push the tape out of alignment with the head, especially on the right hand side of the drum when looking at it from the front of the VCR. |

. . . hi gridnutter and gary and all who may be reading,
I attempted said cleaning (with lint free cloth and isopropyl alcohol) and here's what resulted:
1) The pre-cleaning, snowy image breakup became good image upon post-cleaning playback, but only on the top two thirds of the monitor. The bottom third of the playback display continued to experience snowy image breakup.
2) Cleaning process resulted in new tape feeding problem. Upon play, tape now rides up on, over and off the guideposts (not sure what those are technically called), and tape starts to gang or scrunch into end spool on cassette.
. . . any thoughts or advice on where to proceed from here would be most appreciated.
. . . thanks all in advance!
