|
|
Hi,
I have a Denon D-850 stereo unit that has not seen a lot of work.
I notice that the CD player does not play any of the more recent file formats (fair enough I suppose, given its age). Other than this problem, I am quite happy with it.
Before I make the move to replace it with something that does, does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the firmware/software in the unit?
Cheers

While it is possible to upgrade the firmware on almost any consumer electronic product. You have to find out if there even is an upgrade available, and to do that you can only find it on the Denon site so I would begin there. But I would highly doubt that there is an upgrade to play more formats.
Now, getting back to the newer formats. Your best bet in choosing a new DVD player is to go to this site:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?DVDname=&Search=Search&divx=1&dvdethernet=1&country=&orderby=Name&hits=25&Submit2=Search
From there you can check off which options you want and it will return a complete list of models with your specs and prices. When choosing a new DVD player, make sure it plays the DivX format as well as all the others. Another handy option is a USB port and ethernet port.

Paul,
Thanks for your advice.
Apologies for the delay in reply but I had a lot of difficulty getting back on for a couple of weeks.
I suspected that this would be the case. I couldn't find anything useful on the Denon site so I think I'll go out and find something newer.
Cheers

I've got 4 DVD Players sitting on the floor in my bedroom. They all work, and they all have different features. The oldest one only plays store bought DVD's the next 3 play .avi and diVx files. My current one in use is an IO data DVD player. It has a network connection to stream media from my computer system for play on the player ( Although I can't seem to get this feature to work) and it has a USB port. Mostly what I do is I download movies on my other PC, network it over to my main PC, put it on to a 2GB flash drive, and then play it on the DVD player. No wI don't have to burn a CD or DVD to watch a movie once. I've got stacks and stacks of movies on CD. I give em to my friends now.
And then for those really pesky disks, on my system diwnstairs I have an Apex 1500 DVD player. It doesn't play divX, but it will play anything else. Disks that the other player spits out polay with ease on the Apex.
