| I have a Clarke autoranging digital multimeter. If I switch it to read d.c. or a.c. volts, without anything connected to it, it shows spurious constantly varying readings of up to several hundred millivolts. If I then connect the test leads and short them together, the readings fall to zero. It seems to read correctly when connected to a voltage source. Are these spurious open circuit readings normal, or is it about to die? |

Due to high input impedance & the nature of digital counter circuitry, it is a very common.
