from another forum

The message PROTECT FAN may indicate that there has been fan failure, but it also may be the result of a cold solder joint.

Service Bulletin Document Reference E08912783, dated 11/14/2000, "PROTECT FAN DISPLAYED WHEN POWERED ON - REPOSITIONED D955", addresses one such case.

The SYMPTOMS listed are as follows:

"Protect fan displayed when unit is powered up, pin 70 at IC1201 reading 1.2v found diode stack D955 +5v terminal not feeding through circuit board at solder point.

Repositioned diode and tested unit."

D955 is located in the upper left hand corner of the MAIN BOARD. D955 is the bridge rectifier unit for the +5V REG power supply. Apparently, the problem was caused by a low +5V REG power supply output voltage.
