I’m throwing up this post on behalf of chap I know who lives on a narrow boat so does not have internet access.

Basically I need a bit of advice identifying a blown MOSFET removed from his 12volt – 230volt inverter. He’s prepared to throw it away but as inverters are not particularly cheap he’s was quite keen to get it repaired.

As far as he knows if the MOSFET is replaced the unit will work again. If not he’s going to sling it.

The component in question I’m assuming is a power MOSFET made by a company called FAIRCHILD
It is the typical square shape with a metal tag with a hole in it to bolt it to the heat sink and three legs.

The writing on the component is laid out exactly as such:

F 1 FO9
FQP
50NO6

(The capital F is the Fairchild Logo they print on all of their components as far as I can make out)

I know a little bit about electronics but not enough to solve this problem. I've found a refrence to the components code on the Web but I think it's slightly different:

http://www.fairtek.com.cn/cpjs/e_mosfet.htm

So the question is where can I buy one of these components or can you suggest another make that will do the job? Confused

Cheers Andy Cool

50n06 is the generic number, made by different manufacturers such as "UTC" or "ON semiconductor"---- FQP denotes the manufacturer which in this case is Fairchild. Here's the specs;

Not sure which supplier is close to you, but should be able to get it pretty much anywhere or even on ebay. In inverter application, best try not to substitute to a different number as the breakdown/timing issues can be critical.

How can I check that the 50N06 is bad?

If those Mosfets don't go bad, what else may cause them to get destroyed?

My application is an amplifier where those 50N06 are in, and one shows short to ground on 3 legs (not right I would say).

Mosfets should read open so yes it is bad.
