Have a 2-year old Magnavox DVD player/recorder that was working fine. Then one day would not turn on. So I bought another Magnavox VCR/DVD combo player/recorder machine. Within a year, same issue. Worked fine, then suddenly would not power up (not manually or with remote). I looked for fuses or reset buttons and found nothing, not even inside the case. Anyone know what the problem is with these machines?

Planned obsolescence, Cheaply manufactured using the cheapest parts they can acquire so they can make largest profit possible, you know, "the usual reasons."

Yep! I suspected as much...
Just hoped there was a way to bypass the off/on switch?

Put a jumper wire across switch.

Probably won't change anything. Most likely a power supply failure.
