my guess is that the smps for that TV has stopped functioning. The SMPS provides power for the remote operation as well as other funtions in the TV. In other words, when the TV is in standby, the SMPS is on and providing power to the remote control receiver within the TV. If that power is not being provided, the TV has no way to react to remote control commands.

My limited experience is that the SMPS also provides voltages for other functions. So, even local buttons on the TV will not function.

Your remote control does nothing? Do any buttons have an effect?

If the SMPS has totally stopped functioning...how do red lights obtain power?
Some sets have a seperate "standby" power supply and some sets use a portion of the main SMPS to supply "standby" voltage(s).

Thank JTS. Great point!

I was thinking it sounded similar to the receiver I am working on. In my case, the red LEDs flash as the SMPS attempts to function. I believe you are saying that since his are on solid, some portion of the SMPS or the standby supply (a 3rd supply?) is working.

Also remember that these sets are built to shut down the SMPS if set detects a problem on any one of many circuits.
You could try unplugging connectors one at a time (or whole boards) and see if the set will come on the same or differently. If bad Y-sustain board, for example, unplugging may allow set to turn on / run with audio only.
