Sony SLV-X810 VHS VCR - Will not rewind

My SLV-X810 will not rewind, either in play mode, after stopping, or by pressing "high speed rewind". It engages for about half a second, and then disengages, as if pressing stop (tape get's withdrawn from mechanism)

All other functions are OK, ie play, record, and fast forward.

Any hints as to how to fix this?

Provided that there is no mechanical issue preventing the tape travel, sounds like a reel sensor problem. Is there any Lxx code shown on the display when it fails? If so, you have a bad reel sensor on the supply side.--not something for an average end user to tackle.

If vcr plays and wont rewind,replace or restore(rubber restore chemical)roller and drive belt under deck.
