everytime i go to turn my stereo up loud, a protect thing comes up.how do i fix it?

Hi everybody
I've experienced the same kind of problem: when I turn my stereo on, sometimes it only shows PROTECT and turn off, the rest of the time it won't even turn on. I noticed that the fan wasn't working, is it related? What's the problem otherwise?
