We are an authorized Yamaha servicer and not all that often see the MCX-1000
A customer came in with one this week and claimed it was hit by lightning. We are trying to determine if this a natural failure or lightning.
We can get it to power up,but no functions. The client status lights strobe one by one then the Timer ,LAN standby, and encoder lights come on then all go off except LAN standby. The display shows LAN standby mode Setting now...and then the display will turn off ,the green LED will return to red on the power button. The unit can also be put into one of the test modes that allows you to test display and fan etc. everybody so far has said replace the main pcb.Cost is $455 .We want to be sure. Power supplies all check ok and no error codes. Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Nearly impossible to tell if lightning done it or not? I would think you'd see some sort of a power &/or syscon issue but technically it is possible. Heck it could even be a software corruption issue. Any hard drive activity? I Suppose the main board is the next logical step.... If Auth for musiccast, you ought to check with Allen@Yamaha. He might be able to give you pointers?

Thanks.
Already talked with Allen, and he thinks main pcb,but on something with a cost of $455 for the pcb it's always good to get as much input as you can.
The other Yamaha equipment the customer brought in had no signs of lightning damage and work just fine. That's why we got suspicious and hoped someone had been down this road before with the same symptoms. We over the past 30 plus years have had customers bring in equipment and claim it was hit lightning and you know full well they just want the insurance company buy them a new one knowing that the equipment died of natural causes.

Thanks again for the input

I know exactly what you mean. Used to see that all the time where they see something new and hope their insurance will junk it. Worst of all, everyone ends up paying for it with higher premiums.
If there is NO other evidence on any other piece, I would flat out refuse calling it lightning damage. Unfortunately, on many occasions, the adjuster would end up siding with their client regardless of the fact. Mad
