Hi

I'm looking for a video head wheel assembly from an old Ampex quadruplex VTR such as VR2000, VR1200, AVR1, AVR2. I want to mount the assembly on a nice wooden plinth, together with the tape guide, and be able to run up the head wheel motor from an external power supply.

Ideally I'm looking for the whole assembly which shaped the 2" tape into the canoe shape - about 8-10" in length, I believe.

Video tips should be present but condition immaterial.

Please check your garage/attic/lock-up...!

Many thanks.

Check out these Ampex quad erase and audio head assemblies on Ebay. They went before and after the video head unit. These units were esential as they not only recorded and read the control track and audio information, they set the entrance and exit hights of the tape.

Thanks PBS Engineer - I've had a look and have stopped drooling now!

I joined the BBC in London in 1979 and then moved to another national broadcaster, Channel 4, in 1987 largely on the basis of my fascination with the VR2000/1200 behemoths I spied through the windows of a regional broadcaster in the south of England in 1969 when I was a 12-year-old on a bike (the recreation ground backed-onto the TV station).

I later did some training on a '1200/2000 and worked "for real" on an AVR2, though mainly VPR2B, BVU800 and latterly D3s and D5s (before the servers took over!)

Will get my headwheel assembly - sorry, "assy" - one day, I hope!

Thanks for your interest and the steers.
