My Nv-ds 65 plays and record for 5 secs and then switches off. The power light then starts to flash and after about 1 minute the camera shuts down completely. I have checked all the menu settings and read the manual from cover to cover with no solution. Very anoid
The camera is only 2 years old.
Please help |

If the camera operates for a long period of time without activating the play/record function then camcorders like vcr's are microprocessor controlled with sensors that detect problems within the tape mechanism and if one should occur it goes into a type of emergency mode to prevent damage to the mechanism or tape and simply shuts down.
An example would be a DEW sensor and this will activate if moisture detected to stop the tape sticking to the drum (this usually provides an indication on the display if this is active while most other problems don,t unless a fault code is shown) but will recover as it warms up but it is difficult to diagnose a problem without at least observing tape movement when the problem appears.
Modern camcorders are difficult to repair and may require patch leads, board extensions and specialised equipment to diagnose or make adjustments and due to this may be advised to return to the manufacturer for service.
If the camera is switching off without play/ record active then batteries cause problems with batteries not holding charge as faulty or charger and in particular I have had problems with high capacity alternative batteries being used instead of the specified original type.
The reason is that camcorders have a circuit to detect battery power and some cameras take into consideration the internal impedance of the original battery within this circuit and if you use an alternative type with different values then the camera may decide it is flat even although it may actually have a full charge and switch off. It is also possible a component failure is causing the same symptoms.
This is just in general and not specific to the camera mentioned. _________________ If in doubt pull the plug out. |

Sounds like a problem with take-up or supply reel sensor. Pay attention to viewfinder &/or LCD monitor. There should be a3 digit error code displayed
like Fxx or Uxx which points to the problem. What code is showing? |

Thank you for your interest.
The display does not show any message or error code at all. The camera simply stops rewinding after 15 s or playing after 5 s of tape, the power light blinks and turn off after 45 s, more or less. I turn it on and off and always the same performance. No track about what's going on! |

Thanks Sparky for the detailed explanation. I have checked the DEW, Battery and Tape - all seem to be OK. I received a verbal quote from a local repairer for about AU$200. I sent an email to Panasonic Australia - they were useless. I am really struggling with the concept of spending so much money on a product that is only 2 years old and hardly used.

Hi R_ay
No code is displayed during playback or record before the unit shuts down. Absolutely no nonstandard information is displayed on the screen.
Thanks

Hi,
I have the same camera, and last night suddenly it would not work It has the same problem with the flashing power light and only working for a few seconds before making winding noises and switching off.
I know this forum is a bit old.... but did you get your camera to work???
