Toshiba SD-V291 VCR/DVD combo ejects tape immed after load

Hi. Above noted machine loads tape, but then imediately ejects the tape. I removed the cover and the tape cassette seems to seat properly, but the capstans etc do not engage the tape against the head.

After some searching, suggestions lead to the cleaning/replacing the mode switch. I have no idea where to find it, or whether this is actually the problem.

Any ideas?
