my 5 year old sony trinitron suddenly turns itself off with bright flashes of green "lightning" on the screen and makes a loud pop. somestmes turns itself on right afterward too... any ideas?

Sounds like a bad crt. Sorry. NWR. Not worth repair.

I had a 34 inch sony in a few weeks ago with simular problems, it was coverd in dry joints, resoldering the boards solved the problem

We had a bunch of Sony 27's that had similar problems at a call center. They all had bad solder joints, only a few of them actually had bad picture tubes. The problem is after they were repaired, they started exhibiting the same behavior several months later in some cases.
